Author : Khyrunnisa A
Genre : Humour
Publisher : Tranquebar
Have you ever revisited any incident in your life and felt funny about that? Khyrunnisa here take us through some mundane chores that were probably not so funny when it actually happened but her narrations have made them really funny. That is what Tongue in Cheek is all about.
Being a malayalee, I could relate to many of the incidents, the common ones that have been mentioned in the book. The anecdotes have been classified under several themes and here I am listing some of my favourites.
Gastronomical Glitches – Ohh… a cold kulcha is nothing less than a piece of rubber. Haven’t we experienced this? Delicate eggs to rubber bands flying around, well, now when i think of it, I do laugh out loud. And mistaken identity, I have seen my cousin relish payasam, thinking that it was olan and lamenting the olan to be sweet. Oh wait, have you got confused between the pieces in paneer butter masala and butter chicken?Â
Wedding Wows – a subtle take on the love for gold that Kerala has, this section took me back to the various wedding scenes. Parking woes to racing to the dining and to searching for a key or a purse, you will see yourself smiling as you read through this section.
Just What The Doctor Ordered – Trying home remedies or hitting the gym, well if that’s not funny enough, then how about a sitting with the dentist. A funny take on these instances make up this section.Â
DIY Misadventures – I am laughing at the mishaps that I have done in the name of DIY as I type out this review. So read the book to explore.
Tech-Age Glitches – We all struggled to cope up with a new technology. Khyrunnisa has expressed that in the most humorous way. Planet of Apps, well the title is tickling my bones.
Fun in the City – There can’t be a single person who hasn’t slept during a classroom lecture or a speech or a discourse, the first anecdote in this section brought back so many memories which were indeed worth a laugh.
Kitchen Blips – Kitchen, the lab in every household where anything can happen any time. This section had me think over the blunders that I did in the kitchen.
Whose Word Is It Anyway – These autocorrect and word suggestions on our phones is something that irritates. At the same time, how these predictions come about is a point to be pondered. Also, addressing people according to their age, sigh! This can become an unpardonable sin!
Overall, Tongue in Cheek can be your go to book to relieve you from stress and the mundane chores.
